SEO for law firms, one practice area at a time.

Search engine optimisation (SEO) is what puts your firm in front of locals hunting for help with a separation, a house purchase or a criminal charge. We write the pages, profiles and listings Google needs to rank you for those problems, then count the enquiries that follow.

Someone searching Google on their phone

Nobody types "law firm" into Google

They type their situation, often late at night and anxious. "Separation lawyer Parramatta." "What happens after a drink driving charge." "Probate timeframes Queensland." Three searches, three people, three kinds of matter, and each one clicks the result that seems written for them. A single services page with a paragraph per practice area loses all three.

So the job is to give each of those searches a proper destination: a dedicated page for every matter type, pages for the areas your firm really covers, and solicitor details that make the page believable to Google and to a nervous reader alike. It rests on our general search service, with extra care in two places: Google scrutinises legal content more closely than most topics, and every page has to fit the conduct rules on legal advertising.

Six things that earn legal rankings

What law firm SEO covers

A page per practice area

Each area of law you practise is found in its own right, whether that's conveyancing, criminal, commercial, family, personal injury, or wills and estates.

Why it matters: an anxious reader clicks the result that looks written for their problem.

Genuinely local location pages

You show up in the suburbs, regions and courts you genuinely serve, and nowhere you don't.

Why it matters: clients want a lawyer they can reach, and thin lookalike pages tend to hurt more than help.

A profile that fits your structure

Your map listings match how the firm is really set up, with every staffed office easy to find.

Why it matters: the map is often where a local client first sees you.

Solicitor profiles with substance

Readers can see who your solicitors are, where they were admitted and the work they take on.

Why it matters: Google and nervous clients both look for a real, qualified person behind the advice.

Reviews within conduct limits

A steady flow of genuine reviews, gathered in a way checked against your professional obligations first.

Why it matters: reviews help you in the map and are often what tips a client towards calling.

Answers without advice

Helpful answers to the questions people bring to a first appointment, kept general and approved by one of your solicitors.

Why it matters: people who find a useful answer from you are more likely to call you when it counts.

We measure it in matters, and rankings too

And we won't promise a date

Enquiries by matter type

Our monthly numbers show calls and forms from organic search broken down by matter type, so it's obvious whether search is bringing in estates work, family matters or conveyancing, and from which pages. Rankings sit alongside them as the early sign of where enquiries are heading.

Straight talk on timing

Organic search builds more slowly than Google Ads, and we won't name a number of weeks we can't back. Your site's age and authority matter, as does the number of rival firms in each practice area locally, the volume of pages to write and how quickly your team can approve drafts. Technical fixes and profile improvements go first; practice rankings follow. Firms that need work sooner often run Google Ads for law firms at the same time, then rebalance as organic enquiries arrive.

Your website counts as advertising

Practice pages, blog posts and even replies to reviews are legal marketing, and they have to meet the professional conduct rules in your state or territory. Some jurisdictions go further on personal injury, restricting both the wording of that page and the ways it may be promoted.

Because the rules vary by jurisdiction, each page is checked against the ones that apply to you before it goes live, and your firm approves all of it. Our legal advertising rules summary goes into more detail.

#1

organic for brand searches, up from page 4.

For a Darwin law firm on a full-stack retainer, we ran search engine optimisation alongside a rebuild of its Google Ads. People searching the firm by name now find it at the top. Someone searching a firm by name has usually been recommended it, so when the firm was buried, it was losing clients who had already chosen it.

The ranking applies only to searches for the firm's own name, measured Jul 1 to Jul 31, 2026. For the paid side of the same engagement, see Google Ads for law firms page. Read the case study →

SEO for lawyers questions

What does law firm SEO involve each month?

The first months tend to go on repairs: technical problems, a half-finished Google Business Profile, and practice pages the site has never had. Once that's done, the rhythm becomes new location pages, profiles, articles, review requests and a monthly report by matter type, with a note of what we did and the reason for it.

How long before SEO brings in enquiries?

It varies too much to quote. A long-standing site in a regional town usually moves faster than a brand-new one competing for family law in Sydney or Melbourne. Repairs start on day one, and practice rankings grow as pages and reviews build up. Your free review is where we'd map that out for your firm specifically.

Does each practice area and office need a separate page?

Where you genuinely do that work in that location, yes, because a focused page answers a focused search. We steer clear of churning out lookalike suburb pages for places you don't cover. They seldom rank, and they drag down how trustworthy the site looks.

Can we outrank legal directories and national firms?

On the widest terms, probably not, and chasing them is expensive. Narrow the search to one matter type in one city or suburb, though, and a nearby firm offering a focused page, a finished Google Business Profile and real reviews is often exactly what the searcher wanted. That's where we aim.

Who drafts the articles, and who approves them?

Our team drafts them from the questions your clients raise, keeping to general information. One of your solicitors then checks each piece for accuracy and compliance and is named on it. That sign-off protects the firm and also signals expertise to Google.

Will SEO work on an outdated website?

Sometimes. When a site loads slowly, frustrates mobile visitors or has no room for individual practice pages, patching SEO onto it costs more than it should. Fixing the foundations first is often better value, which is what website design for law firms covers.

Can you guarantee a first-page ranking?

No, and nobody honestly can, because Google decides rankings. We can commit to the work itself and to showing you each month what moved and what it produced.
